This course aims to expose students to Sanskrit belles lettres (kāvya) using selections from the Adventures of Ten Fellows (Daśakumāracaritam) a Sanskrit prose kāvya written by Daṇḍin (ca. 8th century CE). The course is designed to introduce the student to the vocabulary, syntax and poetic features of Indian kāvya literature. Students will be instructed in the use of online dictionaries, electronic parsers and other relevant digital aids for the study of Sanskrit. Students will prepare the text for each lesson, and we will discuss grammar, vocabulary and poetic elements as required. We will read some portions of the text from an (often unpunctuated) manuscript and occasionally read some sections along with the commentaries.
