איומים ביולוגיים, הן ממחלות מתפרצות מדבקות כמו שפעת העופות, הן משימוש בנגיפים, חיידקים או טוקסינים ביולוגיים למען ביו-טרור, מהווים יותר ויותר אתגר למיקרוביולוגיה העכשווית – ובהתאמה מקור חדש וחשוב למימון מחקר בסיסי. במסגרת קורס זה, אנו נסקור איומים ביולוגיים עיקריים וכמו כן, הפיתוח של אמצעי הגנה נגדם. המשתתפים יגישו הרצאות ברמה גבוהה, כהכנה להצגת חומר באופן קצר וקולע בכינוסים בין-לאומיים.
לאחר מספר הרצאות פרונטאליות כהקדמה, התלמיד קורא מספר מאמרים על איום שבחר, נפגש אישית עם המנחה כדי לחדד את הגישה, מרכיב מצגת תוך דגש על מנגנון ביולוגי, ונותן הרצאה עם עומק בת 20 דקות.
After a few introductory frontal lectures, the student reads a number of articles on a selected threat, meets in person with the head of the course to sharpen his approach, puts together a presentation emphasizing biological mechanism, and delivers an in-depth lecture of 20 minutes.

Biological threats, whether emerging infectious diseases such as bird flu or use of viruses, bacteria or toxins for bioterrorism, are becoming an increasing challenge to microbiology - and a commensurate source of research funding. In this course, we will review major biological threats and countermeasure development. State-of-the-art lectures will prepare participants for effective, short presentations at international conferences.
